Charles Ethan Porter
Charles Ethan Porter (1847-1923) was an African American still-life painter renowned for his detailed and vibrant depictions of flowers and fruit. Born in Hartford, Connecticut, Porter studied at the National Academy of Design in New York, a rare achievement for a Black artist in the 19th century. Despite facing racial barriers, he gained recognition and support from influential figures, including Mark Twain. Porter's works are celebrated for their realistic detail and rich coloration, which breathe life into everyday subjects. His contributions to American art were largely forgotten until a resurgence of interest in the late 20th century restored his place in art history.
